The Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series performances April 16 and 17, 2010 will be a demonstration of the Symphony’s dedication to diversity, the artistic excellence of its musicians, and the power of contemporary classical music. In addition, the performance will serve as a celebration of Associate Conductor John Varineau’s 25th Anniversary. In Varineau’s honor, the orchestra and members of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony will perform Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival." Also featured will be the Michigan premiere of a work by the Puerto Rican-born Roberto Sierra. The performance of his composition is part of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s participation in the Sphinx Commissioning Consortium; a national initiative to bring the musical works of more Black and Latino composers into the concert hall.
